Claire Mennim, Helix Park, Falkirk

I think for Falkirk, it’s regeneration. It’s one of the big headline sights that people think about – they may think about the Falkirk Wheel, Callendar House and Callendar Park, but the Kelpies are a landmark

“We’re really lucky in Falkirk, we’ve got a lot of good parks. The Helix is one of my most local, and I often bring visitors here to show off The Kelpies. 10 years ago, just as they were being built, we came and did a flash mob dance here. That’s my fondest memory of the park – bringing a load of people from all over Scotland to do the same dance, we all came and stood in front of the Kelpies and it was all filmed. We even went inside The Kelpies and did a wee dance. It was a really nice experience, it was like bringing people together which is what parks are for me, a space for people to come together in.

The park has had so much added to it over the years. It started with the big picture, and lots of little details have been added over the years with lots of little bits of sculpture and wildflower meadows popping up. I think for Falkirk, it’s regeneration. It’s one of the big headline sights that people think about – they may think about the Falkirk Wheel, Callendar House and Callendar Park, but the Kelpies are a landmark, in the top 6 places people tourists to Scotland visit. I was chatting to some ladies from the US who were here to visit, and it was a special place they really wanted to make sure they saw.”

Personally, it’s the calm of getting out and being somewhere green. I would much rather exercise outdoors than in a gym, I find it really relaxing. You tend to feel safer in a public park than running on the streets. I love dogs, and you meet people with dogs all the time when you’re running – they'll chat to you when you’re in a park in a way that they wouldn’t somewhere else.”
