East Dunbartonshire Council are pleased to announce the opening of the first Council run Allotment site. Composed of 40 plots, Rosebank Allotments, Kirkintilloch will provide opportunity for east Dunbartonshire residents and Social Work Service users to produce food, encourage healthy living and to provide an opportunity for social interaction. Half the plots will facilitate a therapeutic horticultural project through Social Work Service delivery while the remaining twenty plots are rented to local residents.

Project Partners consists of East Dunbartonshire Council Social Work, EDC Neighbourhood Services and Carr Gomm
 

history/background/project status

A steering group was established in 2009 to progress Community Allotment Development. To enable project and site development Social Work secured funding to enable the development of the allotment site.

The site identified for use as allotment is within Council ownership and was originally part of Meikelhill Colliery, Kirkintilloch.

Key partners are: Social Work EDC, Roads and Neighbourhood Services, EDC, Carr Gomm and Ironside Farrar

project outcomes

Provide allotment plots for horticultural therapy through East Dunbartonshire’s Community Addiction Team.

Engagement with individuals suffering from mental health, addiction issues through a focussed rehabilitation programme based on horticultural therapy.

Provide training and support for community care and community plot holders.

Enhance local knowledge of biodiversity, sustainability and food production.
