The National Performance Framework underpins delivery of the Scottish Government's  outcomes-based approach to performance. The Government has five objectives that underpin its core purpose ‘to create a more successful country, with opportunities for all of Scotland to flourish, through increasing sustainable economic growth’.

In March 2009, greenspace scotland responded to the Scottish Government’s Programme for Scotland by publishing “Making the links – greenspace for a more successful and sustainable Scotland” which demonstrates that greenspace can make an important contribution to a healthier, safer and stronger, wealthier and fairer, smarter and greener Scotland.
