There’s lots of reasons to love spring – longer days, warmer weather and the start of another Step Count Challenge.

The Spring Step Count Challenge, Paths for All’s workplace walking challenge, kicks off on Monday, 29th April and runs for eight, fun-filled weeks.

It gives workmates the opportunity to get together as a team of five and motivate each other to be more active 9 to 5.

The aim of the challenge is to break-up long periods of sedentary behaviour, boost staff morale and encourage more people to walk more often as part of their daily routine.

Tracking and recording their daily steps, teams across Scotland can battle it out to get to the top of the leaderboard, with prizes, incentives and motivational tips being given along the way.

“Walking is one of the simplest and easiest things we can do for our physical, social and mental health. It’s free and you don’t need any special equipment to do it.

The Step Count Challenge is a great way for workmates to get together and motivate each other to be more active during the working day.

Those taking part are set manageable goals, with weekly targets being gradually increased. Teams can increase the amount they walk at their own pace - but the element of competition makes it fun along the way.”

Getting creative about how to be more active during the working day is one of the best things about the Step Count Challenge. Why not arrange a walking meeting with colleagues rather than staying seated indoors, or walk to a workmate's desk rather than messaging them? 

A lunchtime walk is also a great way to boost daily steps, as is taking the stairs rather than the lift, or getting off the bus a few stops earlier.

The Step Count Challenge is not just good for your health, it's also good for business and great for the environment.

Being physically active can reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke by up to 35 per cent. It can also help to lower your risk of Type 2 diabetes by 40 per cent and depression and dementia by 30 per cent.

Employees who are physically active take fewer sick days, are more productive, and are more able to concentrate. Leaving the car at home and walking all or part of the way to work also reduces harmful emissions and traffic congestion.

Throughout the challenge, Paths for All have great prizes up for grabs through weekly competitions and will keep teams up-to-date about who’s topping the coveted leaderboard.

At the end of the challenge, the winning team the Step Count Champion is revealed - someone who has made a big change to their own physical activity or who has motivated their team to become more active.
