The Attic is a charity that works with young people, children and families in Kirkton, Dundee. With Bags of Help funding of £4,120 they created an orchard on a piece of unloved waste ground and rejuvenated their existing community garden.

Volunteers at the Attic get together for all kinds of activities and have worked hard to create their community garden. Like every garden it needed some maintenance and a bit of TLC. With the funding the volunteers repaired planters; redid surface areas; repainted walls and fences; planted and harvested vegetables and flowers.

The steep slope of waste ground behind the existing community garden had become a bit of a dumping ground so they cleared the land, laid paths and steps to make it safe and planted an orchard. The group invested in tools, including a petrol grass trimmer for the 'wild' orchard space. Volunteers cleared the long grass, removed some huge thorny bushes and planted a mix of fruit trees. To celebrate and show off their hard work they had some family fun days.

"The community garden and orchard will provide volunteering opportunities for a range of local people, including some disadvantaged by poverty, isolation and mental health, and they can learn new skills. Kirkton is one of the most deprived areas in Scotland and local people need access to an attractive outdoor space to meet, get involved in growing and improve the biodiversity of a once run down, ugly, neglected area."
