Bags of Help funding of £8,000 has helped CheckIn Works and
its partners transform a rundown section of the Lade canal
pathway in Perth for all the community to use.

CheckIn Works helps to improve employment chances for vulnerable young people facing challenges with mental ill health, learning disabilities and autism and offers a range of work opportunities, employability sessions and job clubs. The Ladeside Community Garden Centre is one of its six venues and has championed the ‘Love the Lade’ project.

The ‘Lade’ is the historic town canal that runs from the River Almond through Perth before reaching the River Tay. It has been a cherished part of Perth for a long time but has fallen into a poor state in recent years. The area was transformed by clearing large areas of damaged plants, weeds and litter and planting a variety of wildlife and bee friendly plants. Planters were filled with indigenous plants to encourage butterflies and bees along the path and fruit trees and wildflower seeds were sown to provide habitat and colour.

"We were helped by Perth Six Circle, Beautiful Perth, Right Track, jobseekers and local volunteers. We held two open events, invited residents to attend and volunteer for activities. A well-respected graffiti artist painted a mural and we held some open days to get young people involved in the community art project. We have made the Lade a pleasant place for the community to use daily."
