Beasties, Bugs and Bairns gets children out into local Wild Places, investigating wildlife, getting up close to the creatures that live in nature near to schools. Tesco Bags of Help funding of £2,000 gave schools and community groups free access to the expert field staff who deliver fun and fascinating activities - minibeast hunts, pond dipping, senses trails, anything nature-based that fits in with the school’s objectives.

The project was set up in January 2017 with the aim of offering affordable, or, when funding allows, free nature education to schools and community groups.  The project works with schools and community groups within north east Fife to encourage children to go outdoors into their local, natural environment. Children often don’t get enough opportunities to spend time outdoors in wild places, and teachers often lack the confidence and knowledge to take them out there themselves. Employing expert nature education officers, the organisation has worked with many schools in the past year, involving hundreds of children, and giving them the chance to go outdoors to play, learn and explore.  Funding from organisations such as Tesco has been key to this success.

“Nature is all around us, in every community. What we do at Beasties, Bugs and Bairns is to show children that you don’t have to go far to find fascinating creatures or to explore incredible environments, it’s all there, where you live!”

- Morag Lonergan, Education Officer, Beasties, Bugs and Bairns

The benefits of the project extend far beyond meeting school curricular requirements.  The project offers activities that challenge children's physical and mental abilities, encourage teamwork, build relationships and encourage healthy lifestyles.
