At greenspace scotland, we've always talked about parks and greenspaces as our natural health service, our children's outdoor classrooms, our community and leisure centres without a roof. Now, more than ever, we all need easy access to good quality local greenspaces.

As we continue to adapt to living with covid-19,  our Better Outside – using our spaces more resources aim to encourage and support our greenspaces to be used more for activities that would normally take place inside.

Using our spaces more – some starter ideas
Better outside – using our spaces more builds on our work  on the guide to Managing Scotland’s parks and greenspaces during covid-19 - Section 8 looks at opportunities for wider uses of parks and greenspaces to support education, healthcare and community activity.

This includes:

  • Learning outside – making space for schools
  • Outdoor nurseries - early years and childcare
  • Space to play – thriving outdoors and playing naturally
  • Your healthcare appointment outside
  • Care home connections
  • Community centres without a roof
  • Arts, heritage and culture al fresco
  • Our green gym - open air leisure centres
  • Youth clubs in the great outdoors
  • Growing together

Getting involved - We want to hear from you!

  • Have you taken your indoor activities outside?
  • Is another group starting to use your outdoor space for new activities?
  • Are you coming up against issues or barriers in taking your activities safer outside?
  • Are you an organisation that supports groups that could benefit from doing more outside?

If yes, we’d like to hear from you. Please contact us by email (with Better Outside in the subject line) with your examples, achievements, ideas and issues.

Take a look at the Better outside – using our spaces more pages to find examples, ideas, inspiration and resources for taking indoor activities outside.

Remember to always check the most recent Scottish Government guidance and advice when planning activities and events outside.
